Order Hold: pause an outbound order without changing its status
Sometimes an order must wait — the customer asked to hold it, payment is unclear, the address needs fixing. Hold freezes fulfillment on the order while its status stays exactly where it was. Release the hold and work continues from the same point.
How to hold an outbound order#
- Open the outbound order (WMS → Outbound Orders → open the order).
- Click Hold in the action bar at the top right.
- Pick a reason (required) and add a note if needed, then confirm. Reasons come from Master Data reason codes, category "Order hold" — maintain the list there.
A held order shows a red ON HOLD badge next to its status — on the detail page and in the order list. The badge is extra information only: the order status itself never changes because of a hold.
What a hold blocks#
- Creating pick tasks — Order Pick, Cluster Pick, Wave Pick and Zone Pick all refuse held orders (the order is listed as failed with reason "On hold").
- Packing confirmation and shipping (Ship) are blocked with a clear message.
- Changing line quantities is blocked. Viewing the order and editing non-fulfillment fields (notes, references and the like) still work.
- If a pick task already exists when the order is held, the task is not cancelled — but packing and shipping stay blocked until the hold is released. Work already picked stays where it is.
Releasing the hold#
Open the order and click Release hold. The order goes back to exactly where it was — same status, same allocations — and work continues. Who held it, when, why, and who released it are all recorded on the order timeline.
