Tote Carts: Picking Cart and Tote Slot Master Data

Last updated 2026-10-22

Set up the picking carts used for cluster picking: one record per cart, a slot count, a unique license-plate barcode for every slot, printed labels for the cart, and the day-to-day slot care on the edit page.

A tote cart is the picking cart used for cluster picking of small parcels: one picker pushes one cart, and each slot (tote) on the cart holds a different order’s goods. For that to work on the floor, every slot needs its own identity — and that is what this master data is for. In WMS → Master Data → Tote Carts you keep one record per cart, and every slot on the cart carries a unique license_plate barcode. Print the barcodes and stick them on the slots; from then on, scanning a slot tells the system exactly which tote it is.

Step 1: Create a cart (select the warehouse first)#

  1. Select the warehouse in the top bar first. The cart list in WMS → Master Data → Tote Carts belongs to that warehouse — without one selected, the page asks you to select a warehouse instead of showing carts.
  2. Click “+ New cart” and enter the cart number (it is kept in upper case) and, if the physical cart already has one, the cart barcode.
  3. Set the slot count: how many tote slots this cart has (1 to 200; the form starts at 24). The slot numbers and barcodes below follow this count, so count the physical cart before you type.

Step 2: Fill in the slot numbers and barcodes#

  1. In the Tote barcodes section of the same form in WMS → Master Data → Tote Carts, every slot gets a row: a slot number (tote No.) and its barcode. Slot numbers are pre-filled as T-01, T-02, … — adjust them if your cart is numbered differently.
  2. Type each barcode by hand, or switch to Auto-generate: give a prefix and a starting number, click Generate, and the barcodes are filled in sequence for all slots.
  3. Click Create (Save when editing). Every slot must have a slot number, duplicates are not allowed, and if you fill in barcodes they must cover every slot — a half-filled set of barcodes will not save.
Changing the slot count on an existing cart rebuilds all of its idle slots with new license plates — the printed labels on those slots stop matching. Slots that are in use block the change entirely, and the same goes for deleting a cart. Do slot-count surgery when the cart is idle and in the warehouse, then reprint its labels right away from the edit page.

Step 3: Read the cart list and the cart detail page#

  • The list in WMS → Master Data → Tote Carts shows, per cart: cart number with its barcode under it, where the cart is docked, slot count, how many slots are idle and how many are in use, status and when it was created. Search by cart number; tick “Show inactive” to include deactivated carts.
  • Click a cart number to open its detail page: basic info (cart number, barcode, warehouse, slot count, status, created at), the cart’s current docked position, and the full slot table — slot number, tote number, license plate (LPN) and whether each slot is idle or in use.
  • The cart is a container: picking goods into one of its totes posts the inventory to the cart’s docked position, which is the position shown on the detail page.

Step 4: Print the slot labels from the edit page#

  1. Open the cart in WMS → Master Data → Tote Carts and go to its edit page. Below the form, the Slots card shows every slot as a barcode card: tote number, slot number, license plate and a Code128 barcode.
  2. Use “Print all labels” to print every slot label in one go, “Print via Device Hub” to send them to a label printer through Device Hub, or “Download all ZPL” to get one ZPL file with every slot’s label.
  3. For a single damaged label, use the ZPL button on that slot’s own card instead of reprinting the whole cart.
  4. Stick each printed label on its matching physical slot — label and slot number must agree, because pickers scan the label, not the paintwork.

Step 5: Look after slots day to day#

  • Add slot (on the edit page’s Slots card in WMS → Master Data → Tote Carts): adds one more slot to the cart when a cart gains a tote.
  • Mark in use / Release to idle: set a slot’s state by hand when the floor state and the system state have drifted apart.
  • Delete on a slot’s card removes just that slot (you will be asked to confirm). Delete cart in the form removes the whole cart with all its slots — and, as above, slots in use block it.
  • To retire a cart without deleting it, untick Active in the edit form and save: the cart stays in the records (tick “Show inactive” in the list to see it) but is no longer in day-to-day use.
