Order types: small parcel, freight, and customer pickup

Last updated 2026-10-29

The three order types, where the type comes from, who handles it in each fulfillment mode, and how to complete freight and customer pickup orders in OMS.

Every order has one of three order types: small parcel, freight, or customer pickup. The type decides how the order is packed, which papers you prepare, and when stock is taken out. Pick the type that matches how the goods will actually leave.

The three types#

  • Small parcel — for single pieces and small items. You pack the order into cartons and print a carrier label; the carrier picks it up or you drop it off.
  • Freight — for full pallets and large items. A freight company picks the pallets up, so the order needs pallet details and a bill of lading before it can leave.
  • Customer pickup (will call) — the customer comes to collect the goods in person. No carrier label is created for this type.

Where the order type comes from#

  • Channel orders follow the delivery option chosen in the store: for example, an order placed with pickup in the store arrives in OMS already set to customer pickup.
  • Manual orders: choose the order type in the Order type field on the create-order form.
  • Before release, you can still change the order type in the Order type section on the order detail page.
  • Once an order has been released to the warehouse, the order type can no longer be changed here — the page explains why, so the warehouse plan is not disrupted.

Who handles it in each fulfillment mode#

  • Standalone mode: you complete everything in OMS — packing, the freight form or the pickup steps, and the stock deduction all happen here.
  • WMS-synced mode: the order is released to the warehouse and the warehouse team handles packing and handover. In OMS you only follow the progress.

Freight in standalone mode: the freight form#

Open the Order type section on the order detail page and you will find the freight form there. The system works out the total weight, the total volume, and a suggested pallet count from the product details on the order, and fills them in for you in advance.

  1. Adjust the pallet count if the actual packing differs from the suggestion.
  2. Fill in the weight and the length, width, and height for each pallet, one pallet at a time.
  3. Choose the freight class from the plain-language category list. Next to it, the system shows a suggested class worked out from the density — tap it to use the suggestion.
  4. On the same page, fill in the carrier, the PRO number, the scheduled pickup time, and the freight terms.
  5. If a product on the order has no weight or dimensions yet, the form marks it so you can complete the details right there. Tick Save back to product details, and the values will be filled in automatically next time.

Customer pickup in standalone mode#

  1. When the goods are ready, tap Ready for pickup. This step does not deduct stock — it only marks the order as waiting for the customer.
  2. When the customer arrives and collects the goods, tap Picked up and enter the name of the person who actually collected them. Stock is deducted at this moment, and the order is completed.

Depending on the client’s setting, the handover may ask for more than a name. There are three levels — Simple (name and a signature), Standard (a 6-digit pickup code plus name and signature), and Strict (an ID check is also required). The level is shown on the order. With Standard and Strict, the code is created when you tap Ready for pickup and is texted to the pickup contact; the code also shows on the order page, so if the text does not arrive you can read it out yourself.

  • In the Picked up form, enter the code the customer gives you and have them sign in the signature box. With Strict, also check their ID and record the type and the last 4 characters of the ID number — without it the pickup cannot be completed.
  • Five wrong code entries lock the code. A supervisor can reset it on the same page — pick the supervisor, have them enter their own password, and a new code is issued. Resending the code also issues a new one, and the old code stops working.
  • After the pickup, the order keeps the whole handover record — code check, who picked up (marked if someone else came in their place), the signature, and the ID check if one was recorded.

In WMS-synced mode: follow along in OMS#

For WMS-synced orders, the detail page shows the chosen order type and the progress on the warehouse side — for example the outbound order status, and whether a pickup order has been collected. To change the order type or complete the freight or pickup steps, please go to the warehouse side in WMS.

Once the warehouse completes a pickup, the handover record (code check, who picked up, signature, and any ID check) also shows on the OMS order page under the linked outbound order — the same record the warehouse sees, available here for reference.
