Freight Order Labels: Seal Pallets, Print Standard & UCC Labels

Last updated 2026-10-28

For Freight Orders (LTL/FTL), print three kinds of 4x6 labels from the order page: the warehouse standard pallet label (LPN, no SSCC), the GS1 pallet UCC label and the GS1 carton UCC label. Seal each pallet first; an SSCC is assigned once and reprints always reuse the same number; if the contents change, void and regenerate instead of reprinting.

This article is about the label printing on a Freight Order (WMS → Orders → open the order). Parcel orders do not use it — their carrier labels come from the packing station. On a Freight Order, the Print menu at the top of the order page offers three labels once the order is packed into pallets and cartons: Print Standard Pallet Label (the warehouse’s own pallet label — big LPN, SKU and quantity, no SSCC), Print Pallet UCC Label (the GS1 label for the pallet, with an SSCC-18) and Print Carton UCC Label (the GS1 label for each carton on the order). Below the menu, the order page’s Pallets & Labels section shows every pallet and carton with its seal and label status, and is where you seal, print one by one, void and reprint.

Step 1: Seal the pallet#

A pallet must be sealed before any of its labels can be printed — sealing is you confirming “this pallet is finished and its contents will not change”. In the Pallets & Labels section, click Seal on the pallet row and confirm. The pallet status becomes Closed and stays frozen: picking or moving stock on a sealed pallet is blocked until you unseal it. Two moments seal automatically: when a Freight Order finishes packing, its pallets are sealed for you; and loading a pallet onto a truck also seals it. If you do need to change a sealed pallet, use Unseal on the same row and type a reason — unsealing voids that pallet’s SSCC labels (see Step 4), because the contents may change.

Step 2: Print the three labels#

  • Standard pallet label — the warehouse’s own label: big LPN barcode, client, warehouse, SKU and quantity (a mixed pallet prints MIXED with the SKU count and total pieces instead of a single SKU barcode). It carries no SSCC. Print it for pallets that stay inside your own network or for receivers who do not ask for GS1 labels.
  • Pallet UCC label — the GS1 label for the pallet: ship-from / ship-to, carrier, BOL/PRO numbers, the pallet sequence (Pallet 1 of 3), the PO number when the receiver uses one, and the SSCC-18 at the bottom. If the order has a retailer template, that template is used; otherwise the standard GS1 pallet template. Print it when the receiver (retailer DC, marketplace) requires GS1 pallet labels.
  • Carton UCC label — one GS1 label per carton on the order, each with its own SSCC and the carton’s contents summary. Cartons come from the order’s packed packages; a carton can be labeled once it is packed. Print from the same Print menu, or per carton in the Pallets & Labels section.
  • Ways to print: the Print menu prints for the whole order at once; each pallet/carton row in Pallets & Labels prints just that one. Labels go through Device Hub to the warehouse label printer. If some labels fail (paper out, printer busy), the successful ones are recorded and the failed ones stay on screen with a Reprint button — reprinting a failed label reuses the exact same label and number, it never creates a new SSCC.

Step 3: Reprints keep the same SSCC — changed contents do not reprint#

An SSCC identifies one specific pallet or carton with specific contents. That is why reprinting a UCC label (damaged label, extra copy for the other side of the pallet) always prints the same SSCC — the system remembers the number and what was inside when it was created. If the contents have changed since — a case added or removed, quantities corrected — a plain reprint is refused with a message saying the contents changed: unseal or open the pallet, fix it, seal again, and the print flow will offer to void the old label and generate a new SSCC for the new contents. Never stick an old-content label on changed goods: the receiver scans the SSCC and expects exactly the recorded contents.

Step 4: Void a label, unseal a pallet#

To retire a UCC label on its own (wrong template, label printed for the wrong pallet), use Void on the label in the Pallets & Labels section and give a reason. A voided SSCC is never reused — the next print gets a fresh number, and the void stays in the audit history. Unsealing a pallet (Step 1) automatically voids all of that pallet’s active SSCC labels for the same reason: once the seal is broken, the old numbers can no longer certify the contents. Once the order has shipped or been delivered, its labels are frozen: they can be viewed and reprinted, but not voided or regenerated.

Where else you see these labels#

  • Load page (WMS → Loads → open the load): a Labels block lists every order on the load with its pallet/carton SSCC status, plus a “loaded but no UCC yet” list — orders already on the truck that still miss a pallet UCC label, so you can catch them before the truck leaves. The Load page only shows; printing and voiding stay on the order page.
  • Package detail (WMS → Shipments → open a package): the carton’s SSCC is listed on the package, so the number on the physical carton can be matched against the system before handover.
  • Before the first UCC print, make sure the GS1 company prefix is maintained: the system checks the client’s per-warehouse setting first, then the warehouse’s own prefix (WMS warehouse settings). If neither is set, UCC printing stops with a message telling you exactly that — the system never invents a prefix, because SSCCs with a made-up prefix are worse than no label.

Docklify features used in this article#

  • Order page Print menu (/wms/orders/{id}): Standard Pallet Label / Pallet UCC Label / Carton UCC Label for the whole Freight Order, gated by seal and package state
  • Pallets & Labels section on the order page: per-pallet and per-carton seal state, active SSCC, printed state, seal/unseal, single print, void and failed-label reprint
  • Load page Labels block (/wms/loads/{id}): per-order SSCC status for the load and the loaded-without-UCC watchlist
  • Package detail SSCC list (/wms/shipping/shipments/{id}): the carton SSCC printed for each packed package
  • UCC Label Templates (/wms/ucc-templates): retailer templates win when present; the standard GS1 pallet/carton templates are the fallback
