Order Hold: pause a sales order without changing its status

Last updated 2026-10-20

Payment pending, customer asked to wait, documents missing — hold a sales order to freeze its fulfillment while its status stays exactly where it was. Linked outbound orders are held automatically. Release the hold and everything continues from the same point.

How to hold a sales order#

  1. Open the sales order (OMS → Sales Orders → open the order).
  2. Click Hold in the action bar.
  3. Pick a reason (required) and add a note if needed, then confirm. Reasons come from Master Data reason codes, category "Order hold" — the same list the warehouse uses.

A held sales order shows a red ON HOLD badge next to its status — on the detail page and in the order list. If outbound orders were already created for it, they are held at the same moment and show the hold in the linked-shipments table on this page, so you can see the freeze reached the warehouse.

What a hold blocks#

  • Allocating stock and releasing the order are blocked.
  • Pushing to WMS, dispatch and shipping (including batch shipping and mark-as-shipped) are blocked.
  • Splitting the order by item and editing its lines are blocked. Viewing the order and editing non-fulfillment fields (contact, references, notes) still work.

Releasing the hold#

Open the order and click Release hold. The sales order returns to exactly where it was before the hold, and outbound orders that were held only through this sales order are released with it. Who held it, when, why, and who released it are all recorded in the order timeline.

If an outbound order was also held by the warehouse on its own, releasing the sales-order hold will not free it — the warehouse must release its own hold on the outbound order page. The system tells you when a linked outbound order stays on hold after you release.
