Warehouses and Zones: Warehouse Master Data and Zone Setup

Last updated 2026-10-22

Set up each warehouse once in Master Data — address, working rules and its physical zones — and every app works from the same warehouse list.

Warehouses are shared master data: you maintain them in Master Data → Warehouses (/master-data/warehouses), and WMS, OMS and the other apps all work from this same list — inventory, orders and routing never see a second copy. Inside a warehouse, a zone is a physical area (a picking area, a storage area, a functional area); locations belong to a zone, and zones are maintained in Master Data → Zones (/master-data/zones). Note the boundary: a yard is not a warehouse — yards are maintained inside YMS, not here.

Step 1: Create a warehouse#

  1. Open Master Data → Warehouses and click “+ New warehouse” (/master-data/warehouses/new).
  2. Fill in Code and Name — both are required. Then the address: street, city, state, postal code and country.
  3. Set the Timezone of the warehouse — task due times, SLA clocks and reports for this warehouse all read in this timezone.
  4. Choose the Ops mode: Task flow (work runs as assigned tasks), Desktop direct, or Both.
  5. Click Create. The warehouse shows in the list with its city, timezone, ops mode and coordinates.
  • The code cannot be changed after creation — it is locked on the edit page, and locations, documents and reports all reference it.
  • Routing priority: a smaller number wins (default 100). When OMS routing can fulfil an order from several warehouses, this priority helps decide which one goes first.
  • Latitude / longitude are optional; when filled in (latitude −90 to 90, longitude −180 to 180), the warehouse can be placed on maps used by transport and delivery planning.
  • The list hides deactivated warehouses by default; tick “Show inactive” to see them, and use Search to find a warehouse by code or name.

Step 2: Set how the warehouse works (Warehouse Config)#

  • Receiving mode: Desktop only, Mobile only, or Both — it decides where inbound receipts for this warehouse may be worked.
  • “Auto-generate putaway task after receiving”: leave it on and a putaway task is created by itself once receiving finishes, so goods do not sit at the dock (月台) waiting to be shelved.
  • GS1 company prefix: used when printing UCC labels for this warehouse; a 3PL can override it per Client where needed.
  • Pack verification: turn on “force per-unit scanning” if every single unit must be scanned at the packing station before the box is closed.
  • Pack weight tolerance % (default 10): the packing station warns when the actual weight differs from the expected weight by more than this percentage.
  • Auto-approve inventory adjustments: when on, quantity / cost / condition adjustments in this warehouse take effect without a separate approval step.

Step 3: Set the warehouse rules — handover, voice, assembly, slotting and oversize#

  • Carrier handover: orders are packed at the packing station first. Auto means the handover is confirmed from the end-of-day manifest; Manual means packed orders wait until someone confirms the carrier handover on the mobile handover page. Either way, an order becomes fulfilled only when the carrier handover is confirmed. The same section sets this warehouse's display units — weight in lb or kg, dimensions in inches or cm — used by the packing station for entry and display; weights and dimensions are always stored in kg and cm.
  • Voice mode sets the highest voice level allowed in this warehouse: Off, Voice Guidance (the phone reads each next step aloud; scanning and tapping stay as usual), or Voice Picking (picked quantities can also be confirmed by speaking; locations are still scanned). Workers can only choose a lower level, or off, on their phone.
  • Default assembly staging location: components picked for a work order are moved to this staging location before assembly. If neither the warehouse nor the work center has a default, picking for the work order is blocked until one is chosen.
  • Slotting: enable slotting analysis to get re-slot suggestions based on ABC velocity × distance. Set the re-slot interval in days (default 90 — the analysis page warns when the last run is older) and tick the near zones: locations in those zones, close to shipping, count as “near” when every SKU is scored.
  • Oversize definition: set the max single-piece weight (kg), length (cm) and girth (cm), plus the max whole-order weight (kg). Leave a field empty for no limit. An outbound order is flagged Oversize when any piece exceeds a per-piece limit or the whole order exceeds the order limit.

Step 4: 3D auto layout (optional)#

In the warehouse form’s “3D Auto Layout” section you can give a location code pattern (a regular expression with the named groups aisle / row / bay / level). Locations whose code matches get their 3D coordinates automatically when created, and then show up in place in the WMS → 3D warehouse view. Set the bay width, level height and aisle pitch, or leave them empty for the defaults; type a test code in the form to see how it parses before saving, or open the Setup Wizard to be walked through it. Leave the pattern empty to keep auto layout off.

Step 5: Deactivate a warehouse you no longer use#

  1. Open the warehouse’s edit page (click its code in the list) and click Deactivate at the bottom left, then confirm.
  2. A deactivated warehouse no longer appears in dropdowns anywhere. To use it again, tick “Show inactive” in the list, open it and click Reactivate.

Zones: the physical areas inside the warehouse#

Open Master Data → Zones (/master-data/zones). A zone is a physical picking area of the warehouse: every location carries a zone, so the Zones page can show, per zone, how many member locations it has and which pickers are responsible for it. A location sits in one zone; zones are about where things physically are and how picking work is divided — they are separate from location groups, which collect locations by rules such as cold storage or high value.

Step 6: Create and edit zones#

  1. Click “+ New zone”. Fill in the Zone code (typed in upper case, e.g. A-APPAREL) and the Name — both are required.
  2. Pick the Zone type: Picking, Storage or Functional.
  3. Turn on “Join zone picking” if this zone takes part in zone picking, set a Sort order if you want the zones listed in a working order, keep Active on, and click Save.
  4. Later changes go through the Edit action on the row (the zone code itself stays locked). The Active switch in the list turns a zone on or off in place, and the delete icon removes a zone after a confirmation.

Step 7: Assign pickers and check member locations#

  • Click a zone code (or Detail on the row) to open the zone detail drawer. The top part lists the assigned pickers; the primary picker is marked with a “Primary” tag.
  • Add a picker: choose a member in the picker dropdown and click Add picker. Remove one with the Remove link on their row (confirmed before it unbinds).
  • The lower part of the drawer lists the zone’s member locations with each location’s code and type — this is the quickest check that locations were built with the right zone. Locations join a zone through their own zone field when they are created or edited in WMS → Locations.
  • The list’s “Zone Picking” column shows a green check for zones that take part in zone picking, and the picker tags on each row show at a glance who covers the zone.
Warehouse ≠ Yard. Warehouses are maintained here in Master Data and are shared by WMS and OMS; yards are maintained inside YMS (YMS → Yards) and a yard can be linked to a warehouse. If you are looking for dock doors, trailers and yard spots, you are in YMS territory — do not create them as warehouses or zones here.
