Documents: ask AI about a file

Last updated 2026-10-14

Open a contract or invoice and ask the AI "what are the payment terms?" — the answer comes straight from the document’s OCR text.

Once a file’s text has been recognized by OCR (see documents-ocr), the "AI Q&A" tab in the file preview lets you ask questions in plain words — "What are the payment terms?", "When is the delivery date?", "Who signed this?" — and the AI answers from the document itself. No more reading a 30-page contract line by line to find one clause.

How to use it#

  1. Open Documents and click a file to open its preview.
  2. Switch to the "AI Q&A" tab.
  3. Type your question and press Enter (Shift+Enter for a new line).
  4. The answer appears below, marked "answered from this document’s OCR text".
  5. Past conversations stay in the history dropdown — pick one to continue, or click "New chat" to start over.

Ground rules#

  • The AI only answers what the document actually says — if it is not in the document, it says it does not know instead of guessing.
  • It answers in the language you asked in: a Chinese question gets a Chinese answer, an English question an English one.
  • Very long documents are truncated to roughly the first 12,000 characters for the answer — the tail of an extra-long contract may be missed.
  • If a file has no readable text yet (OCR still processing), the tab shows a notice instead of a chat box.
  • Every question costs a little AI Token; usage is visible on your company’s AI usage page.
The AI only reads the document in front of you — it knows nothing about your other files or the internet. For questions spanning several documents, ask each file separately (or use the Knowledge App, which is built for company-wide Q&A).
